At home medical grade skincare
Over the counter vs medical grade
If you listen to the hype, every brand is the ‘Holy Grail’ of at home skincare. Each one makes bold claims that offer you the best results. But what’s the reality?
It's time to set the record straight and to provide you with some important information about the products you use.
-
The ingredients matter! Medical grade products contain more active substances such as retinol, AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acid), BHAs(beta hydroxy acids) antioxidants and peptides.
The ingredients found in over-the counter products are usually diluted and manufactured to suit light, general concerns. With medical grade skincare, you will usually find much greater concentrations of active ingredients and the quality of the ingredients is usually superior.
Here’s an example: Vitamin A is currently one of the most popular ingredients in skincare regimes and is commonly identified on labelling as retinol. This labelling can be misleading as vitamin A exists in numerous forms, but our bodies can only process the form knows as Retinoic Acid. All other forms (including Retinyl Palmitate, the darling of drugstore skincare brands) need to be converted to into Retinoic Acid in order for them to be processed. This means that a certain concentration of Retinoic Acid has a much greater effect than the same concentration of Retinyl Palmitate.
