IPL pigmentation / sun spot removal
what is pigmentation removal?
Pigmentation is the natural colour of a person’s skin. Hyperpigmentation is a common condition which makes some areas of the skin appear darker than others. These marks are also referred to as sun spots. Pigmentation marks and sun spots are most commonly located on the face and hands.
-
IPL removal treatment is one of the most gentle ways to remove pigmentation. Ultra fast pulses of light penetrate the pigmentation in your skin, removing it quickly and safely. Due to the gentle nature of this treatment, it requires little to no aftercare.
frequently asked questions
-
Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin causes a darkened appearance to the skin in either small or large areas. Pigmentation is the natural colour of a person’s skin and it is related to melanin production. Melanin protects skin cells and their DNA by absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UVR).
Darker skin types, in general, are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation than lighter skin types because their skin naturally contains more melanin.
Hyperpigmentation can become darker as the skin cells move closer to the surface. This point is important because, with many treatments, hyperpigmentation can darken in appearance before fading.
-
Yes. This IPL treatment is very gentle and therefore can penetrate the most sensitive and delicate areas of the skin with extreme care.
-
The procedure works by delivering intense pulses of light into the skin, which are absorbed by the target cells and cause them to break down, leading to a more youthful and even complexion. IPL is a safe and effective way to rejuvenate and even out the skin tone, with little to no downtime.
-
Pigmentation is found in the upper layers of skin so it is more likely you will experience a slight discomfort rather than pain. Treatment may feel mildly uncomfortable for some clients, with most describing it as a “quick pinprick” or “warm feeling.” The overall discomfort is minimal and tolerable.

IPL is similar to a laser treatment. However, a laser focuses just one wavelength of light at your skin, while IPL releases light of many different wavelengths, like a photo flash.
The light from IPL is more scattered and less focused than a laser. IPL penetrates down to the second layer of your skin (dermis) without harming the top layer (epidermis), so it causes less damage to your skin.
Pigment cells in your skin absorb the light energy, which is converted into heat. The heat destroys the unwanted pigment to clear up freckles and other spots. Or, it destroys the hair follicle to prevent the hair from growing again.
You can use IPL anywhere on your body, but it may not work as well on uneven areas. It isn’t recommended for people who tend to get thick, raised keloid scars or who have darker skin tones. It’s also not as effective on light coloured hair as it is on darker hair.
-
Minimal Downtime: IPL uses controlled light in specific wavelengths to alleviate inflammation, redness, and thread veins. This treatment is very gentle, with minimal downtime and can be used on even the most sensitive areas of the skin.
Effective Results: One of the benefits of IPL Therapy is its versatility, as it can be used to minimise rosacea, and thread veins.
